چکیده

In social science literature, researchers have discussed the implications of using symbolic interactionist ethnography. While the value of such an approach is accepted in social science research, it has not received adequate attention in IS literature. More importantly, there is a need to begin developing consensus on a set of principles to help researchers effectively combine the theoretical strengths of symbolic interactionism with the empirical strengths of ethnography. In this paper, we take a step forward in that direction by firstly highlighting the importance of the interactionist ethnography approach to IS research. We then describe how the value of such an approach can be realized through achieving congruence and trustworthiness in the research process. Finally, an IS research proposal is used as a practical illustration of how this congruence and trustworthiness can be achieved. By thus combining the strengths of symbolic interactionism and of ethnography, the interactionist ethnography approach can also facilitate the concurrent pursuit of academic knowledge and practice-oriented insights in IS research.

Symbolic interactionist ethnography: implications for information systems research and practice

This paper attempts to contribute to the positivist-interpretivist and rigor-relevance debates in IS research. We accomplish this by reflecting on the implications of symbolic interactionist ethnography for enriching interpretive research, and by highlighting how the adaptation of the “constant comparison” technique from grounded theory may help move the ethnography study towards theoretical in...

Beyond Theoretical and Methodological Pluralism in Interpretive IS Research: The Example of Symbolic Interactionist Ethnography

Over the years, interpretivism has been gradually gaining ground in Information Systems (IS) research. At the heart of this interpretivist movement (which has helped to advance its cause) is a belief in theoretical and methodological pluralism. Against this backdrop, the purpose of this paper is to reflect on how interpretive IS researchers can move beyond theoretical and methodological plurali...

Toward a Theory of Socialization in Open Source Software Communities: A Symbolic Interactionist Perspective

Recent literature reviews highlight a gap in our understanding of how members socialize into virtual communities. Motivated by this shortcoming, we seek to understand how members socialize into open source software (OSS) communities, which are both virtual and normative in nature. Using the symbolic interactionist perspective, we define socialization and explicate the socialization process in O...

Ethnography and measurement in mental health: qualitative validation of a measure of continuity of care (CONNECT).

Ethnography contributes to measure development by enhancing validity and providing a basis for qualitative validation. Validating research measures means making cases for their "trustworthiness." The authors argue for the trustworthiness of CONNECT, a measure of continuity of care, by presenting the interpretive logic through which they elaborated continuity for measure construction purposes. T...

The Generative Power of Signs: The importance of the Autonomous Perception of Tags to the Strong Emergence of Institutions

The first intelligent agent social model, in 1991, used tags with emergent meaning to simulate the emergence of institutions based on the principles of interpretive social science. This symbolic interactionist simulation program existed before Holland’s Echo, however, Echo and subsequent programs with tags failed to preserve the autonomy of perception of the agents that displayed and read tags....
